Antioch University

Once described in a waggish Saturday Evening Post article as "the man who put the Fess in professor," Simeon D. Fess was educated at Ohio Northern University and the University of Chicago.  A scholar of American History and Constitutional Law, Fess is better known to history as a Republican Congressman (1913-23) and Senator (1923-1935) of Ohio.  He developed his interest in politics while, as president of Antioch, operating the annual Chautauquas he held on the College campus.  Known throughout his career for his oratory (such that he was called "Solon") and as a party stalwart (he was also known as "the Old Roman of the GOP"), Fess delivered the keynote address at the 1928 Republican National Convention.
