William A. Bell entered the Antioch Preparatory School in its inaugural fall term of 1853, eventually earning both his bachelor’s (1860) and master’s (1863) degrees from Antioch College.  He later received a doctor of laws from Union Christian College in Merom, Indiana.  A career educator, he served the public schools of Indiana as a teacher and principal in Indianapolis and as Superintendent of Public Schools in Richmond.  He founded the Indiana School Journal in 1871, and was its editor until assuming his post at Antioch.  A trustee since 1877, Bell became president of his alma mater upon the resignation of D.A. Long in 1899, prompting the Board to elect one of its own as president.  In 1908 Indianapolis dedicated the William A. Bell School in his honor. William A. Bell
